This page is dedicated to our founder - Ms. Ernestine McCall (pictured at left) - who passed away on September 19, 2000. Although she is gone she will not be forgotten.
GAPs will continue to carry out her mission in dealing with the issue and concerns of grandparents and kinship caregivers.
The Way It Is Today
Judith M. Mosley
Isn't it the way it is today?
Grandmothers become mothers all over again.
Changing diapers
Up at 3am
Walking the floor again
Isn't it the way it is today?
We have to do it.
We just can't let the babies go.
Mommies and daddies are preoccupied with their hims and hers and addictions,
While children are left alone and infants are left crying.
At a time when we thought we could breathe,
After we've made all our doctor's apporintments,
We find we have little arms around our legs and little heads on our breasts.
We look and say the children need us.
We look and feel with breaking hearts.
We know we have tried.
We know we are tired.
But we are realistic enough to understand, that is how it is today,
So we step in and save the lives of our children's children. |
