Community Sharing

Information is gained through shared experiences or provided through partnerships with community, businesses, educational insttiutions, social services, and legal agencies. GAP's (Grands As Parents) is a bold effort to support families that support children. GAP's stresses the spirit of community and what can be accomplished as a community group.

Empowerment Model

The GAP's (Grands As Parents) model is an empowement tool at work. GAP's participants contribute to the program design, plan and implement community initiatives. GAP's has given a voice and hope to relative
caregivers, a once "invisible" population.

GAP's (Grands As Parents) has established a record of successfully advocating for its members in the North Philadelphia community and for grandparent caregivers across the city.

GAP's has become an information and referral source for housing, home repair, food, and clothing. The Church of the Advocate Volunteer Services has played a key role in helping to develop and implement these much needed community services.

GAP's (Grands As Parents) has brought the plight of relative caregivers to the attention of state officials at welfare reform hearings. We continue to fight for consideration for the work and responsibilities of relative caregivers who become parents a second time around.

GAP's participates in city wide collaborative efforts on behalf of relative caregivers.

Grands As Parents members help to facilitate the formation of new grandparent groups.

Grands As Parents has helped relative caregivers become more visible thorough local and Regina newspaper articles, radio, and television interviews, and personal appearances.
